INDUSTRY AND NATION-BUILDING: THE CASE OF TOYOTA MOTOR PHILIPPINES CORPORATION | LECTURE

Nation building is the process of constructing or structuring a national identity to unify the people so that the country remains politically, economically and socially stable. It is sustained by three distinct sectors—political leadership, civil society, and business—which work together to drive the process forward. Business, after all, uses skills, expertise, and commercial activities for broad social benefits, and thus engages in critical citizenship.
The lecture will discuss the book’s guiding theoretical framework on the role of business in nation-building, including the work of Mathur and Khambi on the automobile industry. Mathur and Khambi assert that the contributions of the automobile industry to technology and value creations manifest in the following: generating government revenue, creating economic development, fostering research and development (R&D) and innovation, and encouraging people development. These are echoed in the interrelated factors that define citizenship in the context of business: contribution to growth in the real economy, the way the company does business, and support of communities. Considering the efforts made by Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation in terms of its core business activities, its social investment and philanthropy, and its engagement in public policy, it cannot be gainsaid that Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation has made an impact.
